Barguna District is located in the southern coastal region of Bangladesh. The area was once part of the Sundarbans, but over time settlers cleared the forests and established permanent settlements, leading to the formation of the present-day district. The exact origin of the name "Barguna" is uncertain. According to local belief, timber traders from northern Bengal anchored their boats here while waiting for favorable tides, and the place gradually became known as Barguna. Other opinions suggest the name came from a Rakhine resident or a Bawali (forest worker) named Barguna. During the British period, Barguna was part of Bakerganj District. In 1871, it came under Patuakhali Subdivision, and in 1904, the first permanent police station was established in Barguna. As the population grew, the region became an important administrative center. In 1969, Barguna was declared a subdivision, and on 28 February 1984, it was officially upgraded to a district. Today, Barguna covers about 939.39 square kilometers and consists of six upazilas.
