M Shaheen Iqbal assumed command of the Bangladesh Navy as the 16th Chief of Naval Staff on 25 July 2020. Before this appointment, he served as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Operations) at Naval Headquarters. During his distinguished 40-year naval career, he commanded major naval ships, establishments, and key headquarters appointments with notable success. Admiral Shaheen is widely respected for his professionalism, leadership, and dedication. He received several commendations and prestigious naval awards, including the Nou Bahini Padak (NBP) for outstanding contributions to the development of the Bangladesh Navy and the Nou Utkorsho Padak (NUP) for excellence in academic and professional courses. He completed advanced military education and specialized training both in Bangladesh and abroad, including the International Surface Warfare Course (USA), Officers Weapon & Tactics Course, and Anti-Submarine Warfare training in India. He is a graduate of the United States Naval War College (Naval Staff College program) and later completed the Armed Forces War Course (AFWC) and National Defence Course (NDC) at the National Defence College. Throughout his career, he commanded a wide range of naval vessels including frigates, patrol vessels, minesweepers, missile boats, and torpedo boats. He also held several senior positions such as Commander Chattogram Naval Area, Commodore Commanding Khulna, Director Naval Operations, and Director Naval Intelligence. He also served as Director of National Security Intelligence (NSI) and played an important role in the Bhasan Char rehabilitation project for displaced Myanmar nationals. Admiral Shaheen Iqbal is married to Monira Rowshan Akhter, and they have one son, Muntasir Mamun Iqbal, an academic at North South University. He enjoys travelling, gardening, reading, music, golf, and tennis.
