Job Details
Architecture originated from humanity's basic need for shelter and gradually evolved into a reflection of social, political, religious, cultural, and economic values. In Bangladesh, architectural history dates back to the 2nd century BC at Mahasthangarh and later flourished through the monuments of Paharpur, Mainamati, and Gaur. Over time, architectural styles were shaped by the Sultanate, Mughal, Colonial, and modern periods, as well as by climate, history, technology, and culture. Today, architecture is a professional discipline that combines creativity, technical expertise, and functionality to meet society's needs.
The Department of Architecture, under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, is the only government organization responsible for providing architectural services for public buildings and housing projects in Bangladesh. It prepares architectural designs, master plans, and layout plans, advises the government on housing, land use, and environmental planning, and plays a key role in developing national policies such as the National Housing Policy and the Bangladesh National Building Code. Led by the Chief Architect, the department serves numerous ministries by designing offices, courts, hospitals, educational institutions, cultural centers, monuments, housing projects, cyclone shelters, circuit houses, and heritage restoration projects. Although it does not provide services directly to the public, its facilities are designed for public use and national development.
