Narayanganj City corporation (Extinct Narayanganj Municipality) was a traditional municipality of the subcontinent. In 1766, Bikan Lal Pandey (who was known as Benu Thakur or Laksmi Narayan Thakur Pandey) from East India Company, took several mouzas.Later in the place Narayanganj Nagar was established . Narayanganj municipality was constituted on 8 September 1876 to control an area of 4.5 square miles with a population of 27,876. It had 12 commissioners, 4 nominated and 8 elected which included the town's important jute merchants, one of whom was always the chairman in the past. Narayanganj Municipality gained fame as a "Model Municipality " in the then Bengal Province. On 30 September 1931, Narayanganj municipality introduced electricity to Narayanganj town with the help of Chittagong Electricity Supply Co. Prior to this, city lights were based on kerosene. Narayanganj Municipality, situated on the bank of the Shitalakshya river, has been playing an important role in business trade for more than a hundred years and the capital is known as "The gateway of Dhaka". In the British period, Narayanganj has become a busiest port of trade because of the smooth flow of Shitalakshya river and improved communication system. Once the steamer service was started from Narayanganj river port and all trains from other parts of the country were left from Narayanganj. Improved communication system with road, train and steamer service makes Narayanganj city famous for jute trade. For this reason, Narayanganj was dubbed as a "Dandee of the East". In the adjacent densely populated industrial area, the city is still making important contributions to the economy of the country as a commercial port city. In 1876, the British government appointed H T Wilson as the first chairman of the Narayanganj Municipality. Mr. Syed Mohammad Maleh was elected the first Bengali chairman of Narayanganj Municipality in 1951.
